Rocklogger represents an innovative tool in the geological field, specifically designed to measure the orientation of rock outcrops. Leveraging the phone's compass and orientation sensors, it enables users to record dip and dip direction or dip and strike with a singular click. Furthermore, it allows for the storage of GPS and magnetic field data, along with essential information regarding the rock plane and type.
Key Features:
- Facilitates the logging of dip and strike or dip and dip direction by simply placing the phone on the rock surface in any orientation. The application provides a rotating symbol and quick help features for guidance.
- Includes an Android Wear companion app, allowing users to view and save live sensor readings from their phone on a watch remotely (requires a paid subscription). Users can also opt to log remotely using a wired headset, enhancing accessibility in challenging locations.
- Offers the capability to plot logs on a map using accurate dip/strike symbols.
- Enables plotting on alternate basemaps sourced from platforms such as MapBox, zip files, and online resources (paid feature).
- Supports the plotting of poles or planes from logs on a stereonet, allowing users to interpret data by interacting with the plot to observe trends and intersections (paid feature).
- Permits the definition of additional text and dropdown fields tailored to specific logging schemes (paid feature).
- Records ambient magnetic field readings.
- Integrates a camera function for capturing photos during the logging process. Both notes and GPS data are saved alongside logging details, with photos automatically attached when exporting logs via email from the browser interface.
The logs are stored in a .csv format, which can be imported into applications such as Excel or MapInfo for further analysis. For users interested in geographical visualization, paid versions also support KML file exports compatible with Google Earth (both Android and desktop versions).
Traditional methods using a compass or declinometer typically require several minutes per rock for measuring strike and dip. Rocklogger significantly enhances efficiency by allowing multiple measurements of an outcrop within seconds, accommodating any orientation—including upside-down configurations for documenting overhangs in mines.
The evaluation version is restricted to saving three records every three minutes and does not include features such as stereonet plotting, KML export, or custom basemaps. Users have the option to purchase Rocklogger Unlocker to activate the full suite of features.
